A couple of feet to the right, the calf just might have been able to make it out on its own, as the clearance is significantly smaller on that side. That's how close some of us come to making it out of life's woods and tough situations if only we can persevere and not despair a little too easily. Valuable lessons there for me.

Ricky Holland - you are soo right. you made me think about this. Animals have not been affected by all of the Technology - life goes on....simply. The instincts of helping another in need have faded...there are waylay too many videos of people fighting or stuck or in trouble- I always say to myself "put the damn phone/camera down and go help"

For me it was a lesson in parenting. Make sure your child tries every possible way on their own to get the job done. Then, if they still are truly not equipped or strong enough to do it themselves you're there to help! I wish I was always as smart as this elephant.

A definite display of their intelligence. There are several conceptual problems here: I am stuck on a physical obstacle. You are in distress. We should help. I can use my body as a tool to assist you.

It's a beautiful thing to see a thinking mind in an animal. It shows us just how close to many of our animal cousins we are.

That last elephant, though! Just as they were leaving and the little one trips, the elephant behind it could have kicked it or something if it had not been paying attention. But the bigger elephant stopped just for a moment so the little one could collect itself and keep going. The elephants seem to believe that raising a kid is a team effort.
